A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in total compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
