Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions created to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
