India's capital Rises to Hazardous Haze Following Diwali
On Tuesday morning inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with inhaling dangerously toxic air that fell into the "severe" level.
Record-Breaking Air Quality Readings
Multiple areas of Delhi recorded an air quality index over 500, which equals ten times the recommended threshold recommended by the WHO.
Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1800, representing 15 to 20 times above acceptable standards.
Firecracker Restrictions and New Developments
For the past four years, authorities had enforced a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous haze that engulfs the metropolis as colder weather approaches.
Nevertheless earlier this year, the recently formed city administration petitioned the supreme court to seek a modification of the ban.
The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically questioned by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a balance between "tradition and environment".
Legal Verdict and Enforcement
To the disappointment of public health and environmental campaigners, judicial authorities complied with the request, specifying that green firecrackers could be set off during designated time windows throughout the Diwali.
During the celebrations, there was extensive flouting of the designated hours across the capital, with little monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.
Numerous air quality sensors throughout Delhi showed air quality peaking around midnight to the most severe readings seen during Diwali in at least three years.
Regional Effects
The widespread use of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also triggered a controversy with adjacent Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province partially attributing declining air quality in the city of Lahore on contaminants coming from across the border following the festivities.
Long-Standing Environmental Crisis
Alarmingly severe readings of pollution in the capital have continued as a significant challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the condition showing no improvement.
Around Diwali, the concentration of toxic particles in the atmosphere has been found to spike to 70% higher the most severe records ever documented in Beijing, which was previously considered as the world's most polluted metropolis.
Multiple Pollution Contributors
The situation in Delhi is attributed to a convergence of different contributors including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, construction activities, garbage fires and pollutants from crop residue ignition in adjacent areas of farming communities.
Within these states, agricultural workers regularly ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, generating toxic pollution that remains stagnant over the capital as cooler air sets in.
Public Health and Financial Impact
The economic and health consequences on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants calling home the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to numerous studies.
The contaminated air leads to high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and lung diseases, and can result in cancer.
Environmental contamination is estimated to be causing ten thousand untimely mortalities per year in the city.
