The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like typical physical horror, but inside Together resides a deep meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that come with most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
